Lexus Warning Lights: Meaning & Diagnostics Matrix
The yellow triangle with an exclamation point is the Lexus master warning light. It doesn't point to one specific problem. It comes on alongside a message on the multi-information display between the gauges, and the message tells you what needs attention. That could be anything from low washer fluid to a hybrid system fault. Read the message first. If it tells you to stop the vehicle, or appears with a red warning light, pull over safely and call for service.
Red warning lights
A condition that can damage the vehicle or affect safety. Pull over when it's safe and turn the vehicle off.
Yellow or amber lights
A fault or a disabled system. You can usually keep driving carefully, but schedule service promptly.
Green, blue or white
A system is on or operating. No action is needed.
Every common Lexus warning light, by severity
Search by name or symbol, or filter by severity. Symbols and colors vary by model and model year, and your owner's manual is the final word for your vehicle.
| Light | What it means | Severity | What to do | Keep driving? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brake system warning"BRAKE," or a circle with "!" inside | Low brake fluid or a brake system fault. It also lights when the parking brake is set. | Stop | Make sure the parking brake is fully released. If the light stays on, stop and call for service. | No |

Snow, ice, mud, or road salt covering the front sensor area is a common winter cause. | Soon | Clean the windshield in front of the camera and the front emblem or grille area. If the light stays on once they're clean, schedule service. | Yes, without PCS |
| Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) unavailable"BSM" or mirror indicators with a message | BSM is off, blocked by snow or dirt on the rear bumper corners, or has a fault. | Check | Clean the rear bumper corners. If the message persists, schedule service. | Yes, check mirrors |
| Lane assist (LDA/LTA) unavailableCar between lane lines, amber | Lane Departure Alert or Lane Tracing Assist can't operate. Common causes are faded lane lines, a dirty windshield, or a fault. | Check | Clean the windshield. If it stays unavailable in clear conditions, schedule service. | Yes |
| Headlight / AFS / levelingHeadlamp with arrows or "AFS OFF" | A fault in automatic headlight leveling or the adaptive front-lighting system. | Soon | Schedule service. Headlight aim may be off. | Yes |

What does the check engine light mean on a Lexus?
A steady check engine light means the onboard diagnostic system has stored a fault in the engine, transmission, emissions, or throttle system. The vehicle is usually safe to drive to a service appointment. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration, and have the vehicle inspected immediately, because continued driving can damage the catalytic converter.
Common causes we see
- Loose or damaged fuel cap (evaporative emissions leak)
- Oxygen or air-fuel ratio sensor faults
- Ignition coil or spark plug misfires
- Evaporative system valve or hose leaks
- Catalytic converter efficiency codes
Lehigh and Northampton County vehicles need annual emissions testing, and an illuminated check engine light fails it.
Why warning lights come on in the first cold snap
TPMS
Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10°F temperature drop. The first frosty morning often brings the tire light on.
PCS, BSM and lane assist
Snow, slush, and salt spray can cover the camera, radar, and rear sensors. Clean them before assuming there's a fault.
Charging and battery
Cold weather exposes weak 12-volt batteries. A slow start plus a warning message is your cue for a battery test.
Lexus warning light questions
What does the yellow triangle light mean on my Lexus?
The yellow triangle with an exclamation point is the master warning light. It comes on with a message on the multi-information display that explains the actual issue. Read the message and follow its instructions, and pull over if it tells you to stop or appears with a red warning light.
What does the check engine light mean on a Lexus?
A steady check engine light means a fault has been stored in the engine, transmission, emissions, or throttle system, and the vehicle should be diagnosed soon. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire. Reduce speed and have the vehicle inspected immediately.
Is it safe to drive with a warning light on?
It depends on the color. Red lights such as brake, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and charging mean stop safely as soon as possible. Yellow or amber lights usually mean you can keep driving carefully but should schedule service soon. Green, blue, and white indicators are informational.
Why is my Lexus tire pressure light on when the tires look fine?
Tires can be several psi low without looking flat, and pressure drops as temperatures fall. Check all four tires when cold and inflate to the pressure on the driver's door-jamb placard. If the light flashes for about a minute and then stays on, the TPMS system itself needs service.
Will a warning light stop my Lexus remote start from working?
Yes. Remote start is disabled when certain warning lights are on, including the check engine light. Resolve the warning, then try the Lexus app again.
Can Lexus of Lehigh Valley read my warning light codes?
Yes. Our service department in Allentown can scan stored diagnostic codes and inspect the system behind any warning light. Schedule at lexusoflehighvalley.com/service or call (610) 530-6900.
